Imagine a major business unit in a global technology company that wants to implement a slim and efficient solution for the bottom-up planning of central key performance indicators without the complexity and overhead of a massive planning application. Centrally defined KPIs and a global data consistency should be achieved while local units are given a high degree of freedom in how to derive these KPIs. Paluma developed a taylor-made solution that bridged the gap between diversity and consistency in planning.
The Starting Point – Spreadsheets and Manual Efforts
For a global company in a competitive and very dynamic market it is crucial to continuously
collect accurate forward-looking information on key performance indicators.
Early indications of upcoming threats or opportunities provide decision makers with
the information they need to take the right decisions. Gaining this information typcially
involves a large number of employees from all over the world, which are asked to provide
their view on the development of sales, costs, employees etc.
In the case of our client, central controlling departments were regularly busy collecting
data with the help of a multitude of excel templates. The idea was to send out
centrally defined spreadsheets, to ask local units to input their data and to consolidate
the replies centrally. Over time this process became very inefficient. Different versions
of the templates existed in parallel, and unauthorized local modifications of these
templates made the central consolidation a tedious and largely manual process.
